GIVING TUESDAY 2023We love a good map. Look above at the map of South Central California and you'll notice how the Los Padres Forest is a huge green polygon surrounded by roadshields, cities and civilization. It's so nice to have that large green polygon. Don't you agree?Leading to and within the green are colored lines which allow visitors access to explore, to watch, to witness and to be challenged. The lines (often called trails) are used by bikers, hikers, runners and equestrians for nature viewing, backpacking, soaking and adrenaline. Most of us don’t get to use those lines as much as we would like, yet we have faith that the green and the lines will be there when we need them.If you like to visit the green polygon and use the colored lines within, then PLEASE CONSIDER DONATING TO THE LPFA this #givingtuesday. Just tap that link in our bio. We are out in the green along the lines just about every day (223 days and counting this year) working to ensure that the green stays green and the lines stay colored. We truly appreciate all the continued encouragement from our volunteers, supporters and donors and are honored to be doing what we are doing.See you on the lines and in the green......#givingtuesday #givingtuesday2023 #lospadresnationalforest #lpfa_trailvolunteers #sespewilderness #chumashwilderness #dicksmithwiderness #matilijawilderness #sanrafaelwilderness #santaluciawilderness #garciawilderness #machesnamountainwilderness #silverpeakwilderness #ventanawilderness ... VENTURA BACKCOUNTRY GIVING TUESDAYWe hope you’re heading into what should be a lovely Thanksgiving Weekend. We've got peak fall colors across most of the forest and wild temperature swings where the daily highs and lows might vary by 40+ degrees. Certainly lots to be thankful for right here in our own backyard.#GivingTuesday is just around the corner and the LPFA will be focusing our attention this year on a particularly needy portion of the Los Padres Forest - the trails of the Ventura Backcountry. As you likely know, Hwy 33 was slammed this past winter during the early January storms and sustained significant structural damage. Despite all the hard work CalTrans has put in over the past 10 months, Hwy 33 remains closed with an expected reopening date of sometime between December 2023 and January 2024.While the pavement is being repaired, most of the trails off Hwy 33 have not been so fortunate. The LPFA has hosted some trail days on portions of the Ventura Backcountry including Pine Mtn, Reyes Peak, Chorro Grande, Piedra Blanca, Matilija, Alder Creek and the Sespe Trail, but the vast majority of trail miles have a WHOLE LOT OF WORK NEEDED. Slides need to be cleared, downed trees bucked, brush cut back and camp areas cleaned. LET’S GET TO IT!With your support this #GivingTuesday, the LPFA will make a push to maintain as many trails as we can along Hwy 33, the Sespe and in the Ventura Backcountry. Donate at the link in our bio or at lpforest.org today!#lospadresnationalforest#lpfa_trailvolunteers #lpfa_workingvacation #highway33 #venturacounty #sespewilderness #ojai #ventura #santapaula #fillmore #piru #cuyama #givingtuesday #givingtuesday2023 ... NEW ROOF FOR MANZANA SCHOOLHOUSE!It takes a vill— …….group of awesomely-dedicated and hardworking LPFA volunteers! Some 10 years in the making and it’s finally a reality. The Manzana Schoolhouse has a new roof. On November 1st, LPFA volunteers Greg (architect) and Mark (roofing specialist) broke “roof” on the long-overdue Manzana Schoolhouse re-roofing project. Over the next 4 days, Mark and Greg led a group of roofing volunteers through the process of stabilizing the structure, stripping the old shingles, replacing missing/broken 2x4s, and laying new cedar shake shingles. Before this boots on the ground work could begin, there were multiple site visits and surveys, plans drawn, approvals requested and received, materials found and purchased, and 45 bundles of shingles delivered. This was no small task and LPFA is beyond excited to share that the project has been completed. Many thanks to these volunteers, the Forest Service, and all of you who have donated to the LPFA Historic Building Fund over the years. We hope you enjoy swiping through these project photos, but for those of you who need to see it to believe it, get out there and check it out! The first storm of the season is arriving (new roof finished just in time) and backpacking season is upon us. Besides the new roof, LPFA volunteers also repaired the horse corral and pasture, performed campsite maintenance and hazard tree abatement, and accomplished 1.5 miles of trail work on the nearby Hurricane Deck Trail. The creek is flowing, temperatures are dropping, and Manzana Schoolhouse is calling.#lospadresnationalforest #manzanaschoolhouse #roofing #newroofwhodis #lpfa_trailvolunteers #usforestservice #manzanatrail #historicstructure #sbcountyhistoricallandmarkno2#historicbuildingmaintanence ... HURRICANE DECK REVIVALThe first LPFA Working Vacation of the 2023/2024 season is a wrap! Many thanks to the volunteers who braved the heat for 5 days last week to perform some much needed brushing and tread work on the Hurricane Deck Trail. Thanks to their hard work, sweat, and mild dehydration, the Hurricane Deck Trail is now completely brushed and partially re-benched for 2 miles from its junction with the Sisquoc River Trail. This section of the trail has been badly overgrown for years, but no more! All it needs now is some backpackers to hike it…The Hurricane Deck Trail in the San Rafael Wilderness traverses the entirety of the geographic feature of the same name and is often on the short list of epic trips for Los Padres backcountry adventurers. It is one of the more challenging backpacking trips in the LP as there is no water, it often requires route finding, and advanced planning is a must. However, it boasts panoramic views and endless ridge-walking, giving the trail user a truly wild and authentic “Los Padres” experience. LPFA has been chipping away at brushing this difficult to access and overlooked trail over the past 5 years and will continue to do so as often as we can. As of now, around half of it has been brushed and most of the rest has been flagged. Come prepared, but have at it!Our next Working Vacation is right around the corner (announcement coming soon!). Make sure to sign up for our newsletter at the website link in our bio or at lpforest.org to hear about our Working Vacations and other awesome volunteer opportunities first! #lpfa_workingvacation #lpfa_trailvolunteers #lospadresnationalforest #sanrafaelwilderness #hurricanedecktrail #stillabushwack #butlessofabushwack #backpacking ...
