All proceeds go directly toward maintaining trails in the Los Padres Forest.Also, we’ll be at REI Santa Barbara THIS FRIDAY, 12/6 from 2 - 5pm. FIGUEROA MOUNTAIN GIVING TUESDAYThis year, LPFA’s #givingtuesday is focused on raising funds to help repair and reopen the fire-damaged and currently-closed Forest trails within the Lake Fire scar. You can donate through our bio or website. If you haven’t seen it yet, most of the Figueroa Mountain Recreation burned last July in the 38,664 acre Lake Fire. The roads are largely open, but the trails remain closed due to damage and other hazards associated with burn areas. Our plan is to work all 25 miles of system trails this spring, and assist with their reopening to the public. The impacted trails include:* Davy Brown Trail (pic 1,2)* Munch Canyon Trail (pic 3,4)* White Rock Trail* Willow Spring Trail (pic 5,6)* Sunset Valley Trail (9)* La Jolla Trail (pic 7)* Sulphur Spring Trail (pic 8)* Zaca Peak Trail * and a few other trails that include Connector or Spur in their names....Please consider donating to our Figueroa Mountain Trail Fund! HURRICANE DECK TRAIL UPDATELPFA volunteers spent three days in October brushing the final section of the western Hurricane Deck Trail and we are happy to say……THE DECK IS NOW BRUSHED FROM POTRERO TRAIL TO THE SISQUOC TRAIL!!!! This project followed up work on the Deck that LPFA Volunteers began in November 2023, as well as two weeks of work by the LPFA Trail Crew this past spring, to finish brushing the 5 miles of trail from Potrero Trail to the Sisquoc Trail. We postponed this final project TWICE before we were able to make it happen. It was first set in July for the weekend after the Lake Fire ignited, and then pushed back again in October due to extreme heat. So is the nature of the Los Padres, and especially the Hurricane Deck.People often ask: how long does it take to brush a trail open? Well, this is the perfect example of why that’s such a HARD questions to answer. We started work on the Western Deck on November 1st, 2023….one year ago today. Did it take a year, or 1,600 hours? Suffice to say, the Western Deck is open and ready for footprints for the first time in a long time. There’s a cold front with potential for rain headed our way this weekend and backcountry season is knocking at the door. -Santa Cruz Trail: Volunteer WeekendThe weather is looking great this coming week and so we’ve decided to organize a somewhat last minute three-day volunteer project along the Santa Cruz Trail. The plan as of right now is to drive up to Little Pine Mtn and car-camp at Happy Hollow Campground. We are hoping to have drive-in times both Friday 11/1 and Saturday 11/2 mornings. Once we’re settled at Happy Hollow, we’ll hike down to Alexander Saddle and then begin clearing the Santa Cruz Trail down (north) towards Little Pine Spring. Recent reports indicate that the trail is very overgrown. We’ll do our best to change that. We’ll drive out tired and happy on Sunday afternoon.We’re still working out details on drive-times, car-pooling, food, etc... but if you’d like to sign-up or learn more, please email us and we’ll get you on the list. -MAKING HAYYou all probably know the saying “gotta make hay while the sun shines” right? Well here in the Los Padres, one of the best times “to make hay” is after the sun isn’t shining so hot and before we start to not see the sun (aka when it starts to rain). Now is that time, it’s fall and we’ve been busy “making hay”.Just this past week alone we hosted forest projects on Santa Barbara Canyon, Piru Creek Moto Trail, Hurricane Deck, Manzana, Buckhorn Road, Big Caliente, Apache Canyon, Matilija, Tunnel Trail, Santa Paula Cyn, Santa Cruz Trail and we are currently working to replace the storm damaged roof on the historic Pendola Station ~ whew. Lots going on for sure and more to come..... We’ll share more details in the days ahead featuring most of these efforts, stay tuned.We also wanted to thank all the dozens of volunteers who helped with these projects and invite the rest of you to join us in making more hay in the weeks to come.
