LADYBUG SEASON The cold, higher elevation canyons LADYBUG SEASON

The cold, higher elevation canyons of the Los Padres are known (among other reasons) as the overwinter home for millions of Ladybug Beetles (Hippodamia convergens). If you know where to look, you can find them hibernating on rocks, leaf litter, and trees in masses called “lovelinesses”. But, have you ever seen the next generation hatch and fly away in the springtime?

LPFA volunteers were lucky to witness the massive exodus of the 2026 class of ladybugs on our recent Working Vacation on the Piedra Blanca Trail. Eggs hatch and go through a larval stage earlier in spring, and when the temperatures warm, they finish their pupal stage and molt into adults over the course of about one week. This makes for quite the show as the new adults take flight. Ever seen clouds of ladybugs like this?

FIRE RESTRICTIONS We’re a little late to the gam FIRE RESTRICTIONS

We’re a little late to the game this year, but seasonal fire restrictions for the Los Padres began last week (6/4). You can read the full order below or in our bio, but this means NO OPEN FIRES, CAMPFIRES, SMOKING OR CHARCOAL FIRES outside of developed recreation sites or designated campfire use sites. Sites where campfires are allowed are listed in photo 3 and in the link below. Camp stoves are still allowed with a valid California Campfire Permit (link in bio).

Campfires are great, but so is enjoying the starry sky, warm nights, and avoiding any accidental wildfires. Let’s all do our part to have a safe and uneventful fire season!
