LPFA IS HIRING!LPFA is looking for applicants for both our professional Trail Crew and an Information Specialist position!Our professional Trail Crew works year-round on both day projects and overnight hitches, mostly in Santa Barbara & Ventura Counties. It’s hard, physical, and rewarding work that will provide ample time outdoors in the Los Padres.The Information Specialist is a new position based at the Santa Barbara District Office to assist visitors with questions they may have about the forest. At the same time this position will have flexibility to help with a variety of ongoing LPFA projects. GRAFFITI REMOVAL UPDATEThanks to donations to our Graffiti Removal Fund, LPFA has been able to keep our Santa Barbara Frontcountry graffiti removal efforts going over the summer season! During August, we partnered with @montecitotrailsfoundation to lead projects on Hot Springs and Jesusita Trails. There’s still more to do, but we’re working on it. RATTLESNAKE CANYON TRAIL CLEARED!LPFA spent 5 days over the last month leading volunteer efforts to brush the length of Rattlesnake Canyon Trail. The trail is now COMPLETELY BRUSHED from the trailhead up to Gibraltar Road. Swipe through these before and after shots. Thank you #lpfa_trailvolunteers !This work is part of an ongoing partnership with Southern California Edison to improve nearby trails during the Tunnel Trailhead closure. NATIONAL TRAILS DAY RECAPLPFA has been BUSY this summer. So busy in fact, we forgot to share our National Trails Day projects on the Mount Pinos Ranger District! For #nationaltrailsday this year, LPFA spent back-to-back weekends in June on Rancho Nuevo Trail and Boulder Canyon Trail.Over 3 days of work on the Rancho Nuevo Trail, we knocked out 1.5 miles of maintenance, including fixing one MONSTER slide. We followed up with Boulder Canyon Trail the next weekend and spent two days clearing 25 DOWNED TREES on the upper 1.5 miles of the trail. -A ZONE GENERAL HUNTING OPENING WEEKENDThis weekend (Saturday August 10) kicks off the opening weekend of A Zone South General Deer Season, which is the most popular hunting season here in the Los Padres. A Zone encompasses just about all of the Los Padres from Monterey down through Ventura County. The one chunk of the LP which is not included in A Zone is D13 within northern Ventura and southern Kern Counties - see included maps.With the onset of A Zone there will be a lot of hunter activity across the forest over the coming weeks, in particular during the early weekends and especially this opening weekend. If you have plans to hike, backpack, ride or visit the forest this weekend, be aware that it will be very busy within A-Zone and you should expect to see hunters camping at most of the trailheads, turnouts and campgrounds that provide access into the A Zone portion of the forest. If you’re not a hunter and are looking for solitude, then you might want to head somewhere outside of A Zone. This could be a great excuse to explore some of the wonderful trails and camps within D13 including many high elevation destinations like the Chumash Wilderness and all the trails off Lockwood Valley Road.If that’s not enough to chew on, let’s take a look at the areas within the forest that are currently closed and how that might impact the opening of hunting season:- Most of the Santa Barbara Backcountry remains closed due to the Lake Fire. This includes most access into the San Rafael Wilderness including a closure at Upper Oso.- Santa Barbara Canyon is currently closed due to the Fox Fire. Expect to find the gate locked at Reyes Ranch.- There are closures as a result of both the Apache and Post Fires in the Mt Pinos RD. Note that these are outside of A Zone.- There are also quite a few continued storm related trail closures across the forest. We can’t list them all here. If you have any questions, call your local Ranger District and talk to them about what may or may not be open.Whew.... lots going on for sure.
