SANTA CRUZ TRAIL UPDATE

As many of us know, the Santa Cruz National Recreation Trail suffered severe damage from this winter’s storms and has been closed to the public since January. Well, the rains have subsided and the water levels in the Santa Ynez River have dropped and LPFA has *finally* been able to begin work on Santa Barbara County’s favorite multi-use trail!

Thanks to generous grants from @americantrails and the @santabarbarafoundation, as well as donations to our @givingtuesday fundraising campaign, LPFA has now put in a month of volunteer and LPFA Trail Crew work on the lower portion of the trail. And, we are happy to announce that the Santa Cruz Trail is now 🎉 OPEN 🎉 from the trailhead to 19 Oaks Camp! See the most recent Forest Order at the link in our bio.

This section of trail has been slow to repair since it is cut into a steep face right above Oso Creek. We don’t want any debris dropping and damming the creek, so all of the material you see was placed into a wheelbarrow and moved to a better location. Slow work but necessary work!

While the trail is open to 19 Oaks Camp, it remains closed up to Alexander Saddle and beyond. There are numerous steep and dangerous slides (pics 9-10) further up the trail that are not safe to cross. A lot of work still needs to be done, but we are thrilled to have helped open the lower section of trail and excited to take on the challenge of repairing the remaining slides to get the rest of the trail open!

In the meantime, enjoy this montage of a disappearing slide and then get out there and ENJOY THE TRAIL! Oso Creek is flowing, the Clarkia and Mariposa Lilies are blooming, and the sun is shining on the Santa Cruz Trail!

We will continue to lead volunteer trail maintenance days on the Santa Cruz Trail for the rest of June, as well as on the Santa Paula Canyon Trail (also now 🎉 OPEN 🎉). Sign up at the link in our bio or email us at VOLUNTEER@LPForest.org!

Happy Mother's Day! To all the Los Padres Madres Happy Mother's Day!

To all the Los Padres Madres out there, wishing you the best Mother's Day!

May your day be filled with gushing waterfalls, fields of wildflowers, recently brushed trails, big powerful vistas, mountains, rugged gnarly oaks, tick-free trails, the still amazing amounts of water and of course some down-time along the way.

Have at it!

GRAFFITI BE GONE

-

LPFA dusted off our pressure washers this week and went out to remove graffiti in the Los Padres. What a satisfying experience! With the help of dedicated volunteers, we plan to continue removing as much graffiti in the Los Padres as possible. But,
WE NEED YOUR HELP!

-

If you are tired of seeing graffiti on your public lands and wish it would disappear, please consider donating to our Graffiti Removal Fund! Link in bio. All donations will go directly towards graffiti remover, supplies, and protective equipment. Every dollar makes a difference. A gallon of graffiti remover goes for $65. Not so bad, unless you know that a gallon might only last us one day! So much graffiti, so little graffiti remover. We need more graffiti remover!

-

If you would like to see graffiti removed at a specific location, let us know. If you would like to help us remove graffiti, let us know! Help us help you help the Forest.

VOLUNTEER TRAIL WORK

We've got a bunch of upcoming volunteer projects if any of you are interested in getting out and giving back to the trails. Some are day projects, some are over-nighters. Due to all the intense storm damage from this past winter, we're still focusing primarily on car-camping locations but we hope to have some more backpacking projects on the schedule at some point soon. Stay tuned! Here's what we got in the queue and please email with questions or signup online:

Here's where we'll be working, see link above for details:

DAVY BROWN TRAIL, Figueroa Mountain
We spent months restoring the Davy Brown Trail last year and sadly it was covered in downed trees after the March snow event. We'll be out there this coming Tuesday-Wednesday April 25-26 working on clearing those downed trees. We have a campsite at Davy Brown for those who want to stay the night but we'd love day-helpers too if that fits better with your schedule.

SANTA CRUZ TRAIL, Paradise Road - Santa Barbara
We're finally able to get going on restoring the beloved Santa Cruz Trail and will be leading a lot of volunteer projects on the lower part of the trail throughout the month of May. Right now we have set dates for Friday April 28, Monday May 1 and Tuesday May 2. We will be adding both weekday and weekend dates for anyone interested in helping. If you want to help, sign up and we'll get you on a Santa Cruz specific email list.

Note that all these photos are from Santa Cruz Trail - lots to do!

HORN CANYON, Ojai
Tuesday and Thursdays throughout the end of April

SANTA BARBARA CANYON, Dick Smith Wilderness - Cuyama Side
May 5-8, backpacking project!

PIEDRA BLANCA, Sespe Wilderness - Ojai
May 17-21 working on a combination of the Sespe, Piedra Blanca and Lion Canyon Trails. Hoping for a huge turnout, will be camping at Middle Lion Campground.

NIRA IS OPEN The entirety of the Figueroa Mountain area, including Figueroa Mountain, Davy Brown and NIRA Campgrounds, and Happy Canyon and Sunset Valley Roads, is now open. The Forest Service will be releasing an amended order next week. Campgrounds are first come first serve until Monday 4/17 when the reservation system will be reopened.Last week, LPFA hosted a Working Vacation at NIRA to restore the Manzana Trail and Lost Valley Trail. The Manzana Trail is in great shape downstream to Coldwater Camp and upstream to Ray’s Camp. We spent a lot of time restoring tread, fixing slides, and clearing trees on what is now a largely different trail. Remember that wilderness trails could be slow going and potentially dangerous this year. Know your limits and be flexible. That being said, the getting is good. Have at it.We’ll be hosting a few more abbreviated Working Vacations this Spring. Email us at VOLUNTEER@LPForest.org to receive our newsletter with up to date volunteer information. We’ll also be working Horn Canyon in Ojai every Tuesday and Thursday for the rest of this month. See you out there!Photo 1: @lori_raf Photo 3: Adam Photos 4 & 8: @beemancron Photo 5: Kathy Photo 10: Scott#lospadresnationalforest #trailwork #lpfa_trailvolunteers #lpfa_workingvacation #beforeandafterlp #figmountain #nira #davybrown #sanrafaelwilderness ...
